Spork #15: Milan

After crossing the Alps, we pedalled south towards Milan where a lovely lady called Vanessa had invited us to stay for a couple of nights. She let us stay in her apartment, have a shower and use the internet while she was at work. Just sitting on a sofa after several weeks on a bike saddle was bliss!

We failed to take a photo of Vanessa but here is a photo of Laura's bike outside the Milan Duomo.

Progress update

We have now cycled all the way from London to Croatia, through France, over the Swiss Alps and across Italy. Next we head down the Dalmation coast to Greece, and then to Turkey. Here are some photos from the first part of our trip.

If you know anyone on our route, please get in touch!

Campsite cooking #1: Bacon Pasta

As we spend around five hours per day cycling, eating well is very important to us. The food we choose needs to be high energy, cook quickly and will be prepared on a single camp stove. This means we sometimes have to think creatively so we don't end up eating the same thing every night.

We promised to include a couple of our favourite recipes on this blog, and first up is something we eat at least twice a week, bacon pasta. Pasta is great as it supplies lots of energy and it's cheap. Bacon provides salt and fat, both of which we crave with the high levels of exercise we're doing. We add whatever vegetables are available and eat, preferably in front of our tent with a view of the mountains.

Bacon Pasta (for two people)
250g pasta - whatever type cooks the most quickly
Approx 50g bacon/pancetta
1 medium courgette / other vegetables as available (onion and garlic would be good)
1 x 400g tin tomatoes
Salt, pepper, pinch of sugar, chilli powder

Fry the bacon over a medium heat with the lid on, so the fat melts. Chop the vegetables small so they cook more quickly - we're always keen to reduce the amount of stove fuel we need to use. Add the vegetables to the pan. Fry until soft, then add the tomatoes. Cook for five minutes or so on a low heat, then season to taste with salt, pepper, chilli and sugar (sugar helps reduce the acidity in the tomatoes). Put to one side while you boil the pasta. Once the pasta is drained, add the sauce back to the pan, heat if needed, then eat and enjoy. Add cheese on top if you're really craving the fat!

Spork #14: Shelter from the storm

We have been blessed with largely good weather so far on our journey. Cycling and camping is so much easier when the sun is shining, as it means you can cook dinner outside and you don't have to spend the evening huddled in a small tent.

The single exception to our luck with the weather was our last big day of cycling in Switzerland. We woke up in a torrential downpour and it got worse as the day went on. We ended up cycling through tiny villages as it got dark, in a terrible thunderstorm, looking for shelter.

We noticed an abandoned house with a large veranda and were just discussing whether we should stay on its porch for the night when the owner appeared. He unlocked the door and offered us the place to sleep in for the night. It was dusty and run down, but was warm, dry and safe from the storm: very welcome to two drenched cyclists. Our guardian angel must have been looking after us!

Spork #13: Crossing the Alps

We crossed the Alps over the Gotthard Pass, which climbs to over 2,000m. Cycling uphill on heavy touring bikes is not easy, and we decided to break our ascent in Andermatt.

This wonderful lady offered us a place to stay for the night in the village. Sarah cooked us dinner, provided a warm shower and even gave up her bed for us. We thank her for her kindness!

Campsite cooking

Light My Fire kindly gave us some equipment for our trip, including a very good 'Fire Knife', which we use every single day. It has a striker in the handle for lighting the stove, and the knife itself is a sturdy one, ideal for outdoor living.

Food is very important to cycle tourists, and occupies most of our thoughts during each day. We will provide a couple of our favourite camp recipes on this blog over the next few weeks, which we prepare using our Light My Fire equipment.

Sporks #11-12: Moral support

We met these two chaps when we were cycling across the Alps. They are cycling from the UK to Malta to raise money for charity, and we encountered them several times over a two-day period of fairly tough cycling.

Seeing them drag a heavy trailer over the Alpine passes gave us confidence that we could do it, and their stickers and jokes provided a welcome distraction from the hill. Good luck to them in finishing their journey - last time we saw them, their brakes had failed on the long-awaited downhill so we hope they make it!

Spork #10: Damfest

We timed our visit just right: as we arrived at our friends' house near Paris, they were about to have their annual 'Damfest' party (so-called as they live in Dammarie-les-Lys).

We spent a very enjoyable couple of days resting our legs, eating cheese and drinking wine in the company of Alice, Simon, their beautiful daughter Rosa and their friends.  Their hospitality was unparalleled and we soon felt ready to carry on cycling. Thanks guys!
